Windows 7 Telnet

OK, not a huge Windows fan, but Win 7 is ok… until you have to troubleshoot a network issue. I like to telnet to ports to see if they are open and if they answer (telnet 192.168.1.13 993).

Windows always wants to pretend that it doesn’t have telnet and has never even heard of it (Lies I tell you).

Here’s how to reenable telnet so you can troubleshoot (please do NOT EVER telnet into a device when SSH is so much more awesome and secure.

In Win 7:

  1. Start
  2. Control Panel
  3. Programs And Features
  4. Turn Windows features on or off
  5. Check Telnet Client
  6. Hit OK
